Families worshiping in Sierra Leone

The word “father” is mentioned over 900 times in the Bible!

Fathers have great influence in our lives. As Scripture says, they are to encourage and comfort (1 Thessalonians 2:11-12). They show compassion (Psalm 103:13). Fathers should set an example (Proverbs 22:6) and offer appropriate discipline when necessary (Proverbs 13:24).

Having a father who provides practical and emotional stability for his family is indeed a blessing. Even the Son of God had an earthly father. From what Scripture tells us, we know that Joseph took on the task of raising a child not his own (yes, it took a little prompting) and kept Jesus safe in times of peril. I think we can assume he provided guidance to all his children as they grew, instructing them in the Jewish faith and teaching them those “life lessons” that stay with us well into adulthood.

Scripture tells us what the relationship between father and child should be. When people have access to God’s Word in a language they understand—when they realize the depth of God the Father’s love for them and all people, when they come to faith—family dynamics can change. Give a gift in honor of fathers everywhere. Put God’s Word in their hands!
