Collaboration Takes Flight: A Strategic Partnership for Bible Translation

When JAARS identified the need to start a new type of flight training earlier in the pilot training process, they faced a major hurdle: funding. At the same time, Lutheran Bible Translators (LBT) needed more flight hours for Nathan Federwitz, one of our pre-field missionaries and pilot-in-training, but lacked a clear plan to achieve that. The solution? Collaboration.

Nathan Federwitz is a pre-field missionary with Lutheran Bible Translators. He is currently in training to be a pilot with JAARS (Jungle Aviation And Relay Service).

Through a partnership between JAARS and LBT, a robust flight training program has been developed. This initiative not only benefits Nathan but has also become a resource for training other pilots, equipping them with the skills needed to support ministry and mission efforts in remote and challenging locations.

This past week, Paul Federwitz, LBT’s Chief Programs Officer, met with JAARS leadership to craft a strategic deployment plan that aligns with the goals of both organizations. The meeting highlighted the shared mission of using aviation to connect remote communities with the transformative power of God’s Word.

One of the program’s key contributors, Jonathan Federwitz, an LBT associate missionary with over 20 years of experience in Papua New Guinea, is playing a pivotal role in pilot training. As a former chief pilot and head of aviation, Jonathan’s expertise is invaluable. This week, he is guiding Nathan and another pilot through mountain flying and challenging landings on a hay field—experiences designed to prepare them for real-world scenarios.

Even the simple act of flying can become an opportunity to showcase the impact of this work. A recent flight with LBT Board Chair Marlis Norton highlighted how aviation technology supports Bible translation, connecting remote locations and overcoming barriers to sharing God’s Word.

LBT Board Chair Marlis Norton had the opportunity to join Nathan for a training flight.

This partnership between JAARS and LBT is a testament to the power of collaboration. By combining resources and expertise, they are ensuring that aviation continues to play a critical role in reaching the most remote places with the hope of the Gospel.
