Rooted Through Turmoil, Growing Toward the Future

Strengthening Local Leadership and Sustainability for Scripture Work in Liberia and Sierra Leone
Formed during a time of deep political turmoil and struggle, The Institute of Sierra Leonean Languages (TISLL) and Liberian Translation and Literacy Organization (LIBTRALO) have brought hope and healing to many language communities for over three decades. Now, exciting work is taking place to build on the sustainability of these organizations, strengthening the local leadership and structures in place.
A Vision for Local LeadershiP
Dale and Alvina Federwitz, LBT missionaries to Liberia during a civil war, first advocated for the creation of a Liberian-led institution where producing, teaching, and distributing Scripture materials could be done despite missionary evacuation. Alongside Liberian colleagues, they helped form LIBTRALO. (Hear firsthand stories about the early days of LIBTRALO here). TISLL followed shortly afterwards in the turmoil of Sierra Leone’s civil war.
In 2019, the LIBTRALO board unveiled and consecrated a sustainable office building in Monrovia, Liberia. The new structure provided ample office space for staff to hold meetings and workshops, complete daily work, and produce and store materials. LIBTRALO also rents out facility space, which generates income for Bible translation. Over 20 languages are currently impacted through LIBTRALO and TISLL.
Grounded in God’s Word and Song
This month, Matt Kistler and Paul Federwitz traveled to meet with these organizations for a future planning workshop. Their focus: building on current success to ensure future sustainability. Every morning began with devotions. An especially touching moment was the group song. Each day a different participant led and taught a worship or Scripture song in their own language. The room echoed with many voices, evoking a poignant reminder of the gathering’s united purpose—diversity united by one calling: Scripture.

Seeking Wisdom, Together
Prayer was essential. Before getting into any planning sessions, the group came together before the Lord. They asked for wisdom, guidance, and blessings.

Matt Kistler presented the elements of a good plan and gave time for groups to work together to create a three-year picture. Facilitators provided constructive feedback.

Beyond the Workshop
The time together was more than hard work and planning! One evening, the group took time to gather at the beach for casual conversation. They spent the evening relaxing and getting to know one another. The evening reminded everyone that shared vision is sustained not only by plans, but by presence, laughter, and unhurried time in fellowship.

Moving Forward Equipped and Encouraged
By the end of the week together, the TISLL and LIBTRALO leaders felt equipped and encouraged to move forward in ministry. Paul Federwitz and Linus Otronyi have follow-up meetings in Sierra Leone and Liberia this week.
