Honoring a Lifetime of Faithful Service
The Dale G. and Alvina E. Federwitz Lifetime Achievement Award
Since 1997, Lutheran Bible Translators has presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to honor individuals who have faithfully served in world mission under our auspices. This year, we are thrilled to present this award under a new name: The Dale G. and Alvina E. Federwitz Lifetime Achievement Award. It is a fitting tribute to two remarkable individuals whose dedication to Bible translation has left an indelible mark on countless lives.
A Legacy of Service and Faith
Dale and Alvina Federwitz began their journey with Lutheran Bible Translators in 1971, answering God’s call to serve. Alvina nearly called off their engagement, sensing God leading her to serve abroad, only to discover Dale shared the same calling. This moment set the tone for their marriage—a partnership dedicated to God’s mission.
Together, they worked among language communities in Liberia, advancing translation and literacy efforts even during times of intense hardship. Despite the dangers of civil war, they remained steadfast, providing relief and education while helping establish the Liberian Translation and Literacy Organization (LIBTRALO), which continues to thrive today.
Following Dale’s passing in 2002, Alvina carried on their shared mission, serving in Liberia and Ghana before returning to the U.S. in 2015. Her decades of dedication were recognized by then-Liberian President Ellen Sirleaf-Johnson, who commended her significant contributions to the nation.
A Living Legacy
Alvina’s influence extends far beyond her own work. Through her advocacy at conferences, events, and in daily interactions, she has inspired many to enter mission work—including her four children and several grandchildren. Her legacy is a living testament to the power of faith and dedication.
Celebrating Faithful Service
Alvina Federwitz has been honored as the first recipient of the Dale G. and Alvina E. Federwitz Lifetime Achievement Award. Her service, spanning over 50 years, through civil wars, epidemics, and pandemics, is a testament to God’s grace and her unwavering faith.
To Alvina, we say: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Your legacy continues to bless God’s kingdom, and we at Lutheran Bible Translators are deeply grateful for your service.
