Highlights: ILAC-8 Conference 2024

Regional Director Sarah Esala attended the International Language Assessment Conference (ILAC-8) in Malaysia this past week. This global gathering of language and ministry leaders focused on one central theme: making wise language decisions. Daily discussions addressed key issues such as multilingualism, community ownership, strategic planning, Scripture engagement, flourishing, and diaspora.

Empowering Multilingual Ministry

During the conference, Esala had the opportunity to meet with Bishop Oscar Lema (Tanzania) and Rev. Moti Kamung (Papua New Guinea). They synthesized the knowledge gained and explored how it connects to the ministry of the church. These discussions were lively and engaging, thoughtfully considering how to make Scripture relevant to their respective communities. A significant challenge raised was the impact of having multiple languages within church settings and how this diversity shapes ministry approaches.

Beyond the valuable information shared, the conference provided an opportunity to strengthen relationships with church partners. Attendees shared their own challenges and goals in discipleship and leadership training, building stronger connections through collaboration and dialogue.

ILAC-8 served as a powerful reminder that language decisions are not just about words—they are about creating pathways for people to experience the Word of God in ways that resonate deeply with their hearts and cultures. The insights and relationships formed at the conference will undoubtedly shape the ongoing work of ministry in multilingual contexts.
