Why Scripture Engagement Matters

Why Scripture Engagement Matters in Bible Translation and beyond

Bible translation isn’t just about handing off printed Bibles—it’s about the hope, life, and transformation that come when we engage with the Word of God. When people receive God’s Word in their own language, they don’t just read it; they interact with it, wrestle with it, and allow it to shape their lives. This process is called Scripture engagement, and it is a crucial part of Bible translation ministry. Scripture engagement isn’t just for communities receiving the Bible for the first time, it is an essential part of spiritual formation and growth for all Christians.

What is Scripture Engagement?

Scripture engagement goes beyond simply owning a Bible or hearing it read in church. It means encountering God’s Word in a way that transforms hearts, strengthens faith, and leads to daily application. It’s the difference between knowing about God and truly knowing Him.

For communities receiving a newly translated Bible, Scripture engagement involves:

  • Teaching people to read and understand Scripture in their own language.
  • Equipping pastors and leaders to preach and teach from the translated text.
  • Creating oral Bible stories, dramas, songs, and devotionals that make Scripture accessible.
  • Encouraging believers to apply the Bible’s message in their everyday lives.

Without engagement, a Bible translation risks sitting on a shelf, unread and unused. The ultimate goal of Bible translation is not just to provide access to Scripture but to ensure it is actively shaping hearts and communities.

Why Does Scripture Engagement Matter for Christians in the States?

We might assume that because we have access to countless Bible translations, apps, and commentaries, we are automatically engaged in Scripture. But having access doesn’t guarantee transformation. Many Christians struggle to consistently read, study, and apply God’s Word.

Engaging regularly with God’s Word:

  1. Anchors Us in Truth
In a world filled with conflicting messages, Scripture keeps us grounded in God’s unchanging truth.
  2. Strengthens Our Faith
If we want a faith that endures trials and remains steadfast, we must be immersed in the Word.
  3. Leads to Transformation
James 1:22 warns, “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” Reading the Bible without applying it leads to stagnant faith. True engagement means letting Scripture challenge, convict, and change us.
  4. Equips Us to Share the Gospel
Just as Bible translation equips new believers worldwide, our own engagement with Scripture equips us to share the Good News with those around us. A heart saturated with God’s Word overflows with His love and truth.
  5. We Model the Importance of Scripture for Future Generations
If we want our children and grandchildren to treasure God’s Word, we must first show them what that looks like. A home where Scripture is read, discussed, and lived out creates a foundation for lifelong faith.

If we want to experience the transforming power of God’s Word, we need to be intentional about our engagement. Here are a few practical ways to make Scripture a more active part of our lives:

How Can We Engage More Deeply in Scripture

  • Read daily with a plan – Whether it’s a one-year Bible reading plan or a slower-paced study, consistency is key.
  • Memorize Scripture – Hiding God’s Word in our hearts helps us recall His truth in moments of need.
  • Pray through the Word – Turn Scripture into prayer, allowing it to shape your conversations with God.
  • Discuss it in community – Join a Bible study or small group where you can learn from and encourage others.
  • Apply what you learn – Ask, “How does this passage change my thinking or actions today?”

Engaging in God’s Word—Together

As we work to ensure that people around the world have access to God’s Word in their own language, let’s not neglect our own engagement with Scripture. The same Word that transforms lives in remote villages is the Word that can transform us, our families, and our communities.

Bible translation and Scripture engagement go hand in hand. Let’s commit to making God’s Word a daily, living part of our own journey of faith!
