Mentoring One of Nigeria’s Next Translation Leaders
Rev. Martin Payi, an ordained Lutheran minister and linguistics graduate, is serving in a two-year internship to gain practical experience in Bible translation and community engagement. Through this program, he serves language communities in Cross River State while building skills needed for long-term translation work.

Program Goals
- Gain field experience in Bible translation and Scripture engagement
- Support language development efforts already underway
- Build working relationships with churches and community leaders
- Provide practical support to ongoing translation projects
Internship Plan
Step 1
Community Integration and Assessment
- Observe and learn local language use and cultural context.
- Meet with community leaders to understand current translation priorities.
- Support ongoing translation and Scripture engagement work already in progress.
Step 2
Project Support and Development
- Encourage use of existing Scripture resources, including the Gospel of Luke and the JESUS film.
- Assist with reading and writing materials as needed.
- Participate in relevant training connected to current projects.
Step 3
Partnership Building
- Visit churches and community leaders to share updates on translation work.
- Document activities through reports and photography.
- Maintain regular communication with Lutheran Bible Translators and partners.
