Addressing Literacy Needs in Limba Communities

The translation of the New Testament into Limba allows pastors to preach in their heart language. Literacy remains essential for sustained engagement with Scripture. Building on established literacy classes in the Tonko and Sella Limba Chiefdoms, the program continues facilitator training and supports Scripture engagement through Bible listening groups, Scripture songs, dramatized Bible stories, and locally developed learning materials, including Limba proverbs and riddles.

These programs are not only transforming lives spiritually but also elevating entire communities. One participant noted, “I have gone from being a common man to a notable man in society.” By combining literacy, Scripture engagement, and capacity-building activities, Limba communities are gaining tools for spiritual growth, cultural preservation, and sustainable development.

Empowering Local Leaders

We work with local leaders in Sierra Leone to support Limba-speaking communities through literacy programs and Scripture engagement activities that help people read, hear, and use God’s Word in their own language.

Program Goals

  1. Support literacy classes through facilitator training and supervision
  2. Strengthen Scripture engagement through Bible listening groups, songs, and dramas
  3. Develop and distribute Limba literacy and Scripture materials
  4. Participate in community and cultural events connected to language and literacy work

Honoring the Language

The Limba people are the third largest ethnic group in Sierra Leone.

The Limba are believed to be the earliest indigenous people of Sierra Leone.

The Limba speak various dialects of a language largely unrelated to other tribal languages in the country.

Dialects include Tonko, Sela, Kamuke (or Ke), Wara-wara, Keleng, Biriwa, and Safroko.

The program collects and documents Limba proverbs, riddles, and hymns for use in literacy and Scripture engagement materials.

Program Progress

  • Five-day Faith Comes By Hearing training completed to support new Bible listening groups.
  • Scripture song workshop completed with local participants.
  • Drama workshop conducted to dramatize the story of the Prodigal Son; Jonah drama in progress.
  • Children’s ministry leaders trained to use translated teachers’ guides.
  • Monthly Scripture engagement radio programs conducted.
  • Bible listening groups supervised in multiple Limba communities.
  • Refresher and primer-level literacy facilitator trainings completed or in progress.
  • Writers’ workshop completed to collect Limba proverbs and riddles.
  • Literacy and Scripture materials printed and distributed, including primers, hymnals, calendars, registers, and children’s story resources.
