Pastor Sanu’s journey from educational limitation to community educator represents the transformative power of Krio literacy. Without formal schooling opportunity, The Institute for Sierra Leonean Languages (TISLL)’s literacy training equipped him not only to teach at his local junior secondary school but to witness spiritual transformation: “My wife and several church members can now read the Krio Bible!”
This story multiplies across communities where eager hearts face literacy barriers. By removing these obstacles, the Krio Literacy program enables authentic spiritual engagement, connecting individuals directly with Scripture in the language that speaks to their hearts and minds.

Krio Scripture Engagement Program Plan
Step 1
Literacy Foundation Building
- Launch 5 new literacy classes through Pre-Primer training workshops
- Strengthen continuing programs with Primer 1A and 1B training
- Train 10 Children’s Ministry facilitators in digital Scripture storytelling
- Establish 5 new Faith Comes By Hearing listening groups in Freetown
- Expand FCBH workshops to Kono, Madina, Magbruaka, Gbendembu and Buedu
Step 2
Materials Development and Distribution
- Implement Alpha Tiles training for digital literacy advancement
- Print 300 copies of Pre-Primers for new literacy classes
- Produce 300 copies each of Primers 1A and B for continuing education
- Create 100 copies of Krio cultural and spiritual texts
- Develop teacher guides for literacy facilitators
Step 3
Community Engagement and Sustainability
- Monitor and supervise literacy and Scripture engagement activities
- Conduct monthly radio discussions promoting Krio language preservation
- Organize International Mother Tongue Day and World Literacy Day celebrations
- Facilitate church-to-church awareness campaigns on native-language Scripture
- Establish small-scale industries for program sustainability
