Grassroots Commitment: Two Decades of Community-Led Literacy

The Kuranko Literacy and Scripture Engagement Program’s remarkable journey began in 2000, equipping community members to read, translate Scripture, and facilitate engagement activities. When funding ceased after five years, five determined communities maintained literacy classes through volunteer efforts, partnering with The Institute of Sierra Leonean Languages (TISLL) for technical support and celebrating learning milestones together.

These communities sustained literacy classes independently for 18 years. As requests increase across additional chiefdoms, volunteer facilitators now require structured refresher training, supervision, and printed materials to maintain consistent instruction.

Empower Kuranko Leaders

After sustaining literacy ministry independently for nearly two decades, Kuranko church and community leaders are strengthening and extending existing work. Support focuses on training facilitators, producing learning materials, and supporting Scripture engagement activities led by local churches.

Program Goals

  1. Train and refresh Kuranko literacy facilitators
  2. Support Scripture engagement through song, drama, and audio Bible listening groups
  3. Develop and distribute Kuranko literacy and learning materials
  4. Document and celebrate Kuranko language and cultural heritage
  5. Strengthen local coordination and long term sustainability

Honoring the Language

The Kuranko, also known as the Koranko, are a branch of the Malinke tribe that immigrated into Sierra Leone from Guinea.

Kuranko is a Mande language spoken in Sierra Leone and Guinea.

It belongs to the Niger-Congo language family.

Program Progress

  • Fourteen new Kuranko literacy classes opened in six participating communities.
  • Trained facilitators serve literacy classes and Scripture engagement activities.
  • Refresher and new facilitator trainings completed for Pre‑Primer, Primer 2, and Primer 3 levels.
  • Scripture engagement activities completed, including Bible listening groups, drama workshops, and children’s ministry.
  • Literacy and Scripture engagement materials printed and distributed, including primers, teacher guides, and cultural and moral stories in Kuranko.
  • A local Literacy Coordinator actively supervising classes and engagement activities.
