Summary
The Development Officer builds and sustains strong relationships with individual households through thoughtful cultivation, stewardship, and personal engagement. This role plays a critical part in advancing our fundraising efforts by moving donors forward through responsive fundraising journeys. This role prioritizes meaningful, one‑to‑one relationships, including in‑person visits, congregational and school representation, and consistent follow-up. The ideal candidate is deeply aligned with our mission, communicates with warmth and clarity, and brings demonstrated experience in relational fundraising and donor care.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of the organization’s mission and global impact
- Collaborate with Chief Development Officer and Outreach & Engagement Coordinator to establish and implement engagement strategies
- Collaborate with Outreach & Engagement Coordinator to plan networking and fundraising events, including identifying potential invitees, speaking engagements, and follow-up efforts
- Identify and engage new donors for ongoing support
- Cultivate and steward relationships with existing donors
- Collaborate with the Content Team to provide timely updates to supporters
- Offer regular reports on fundraising activities and donor engagement to the Chief Development Officer
- Maintain accurate records of all supporter interactions (visits, calls, emails, proposals) in the CRM
- Plan and organize personal domestic travel related to donor engagement and fundraising events
- Participate in international trips with supporters, as needed
- Perform other duties, as assigned
Qualifications and Competencies
- Preferred candidate will have a Lutheran background and strong knowledge of the faith
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with donors and stakeholders
- Ability to present information and stories compellingly, both verbally and in writing
- Proficiency in donor management software and Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Passion for the mission and values of the organization
- High level of integrity and professionalism
- Creative and strategic thinker with a proactive approach to problem-solving
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field
- Planned Giving Knowledge/Experience a benefit
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in fundraising, development, or a related role within a nonprofit
Physical requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods while using a computer or performing other tasks
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 15 pounds
- Evening and weekend hours are expected and frequent
- Domestic travel is expected and frequent
- International travel is expected and occasional
