Though the Loko people received their New Testament in 1983, literacy rates remain low. Many churches still use Scripture in languages not well understood by the people.
The Bible Society of Sierra Leone is reaching out to encourage the use of Loko Scripture in both the church and the home. Meetings will be held to strengthen partnerships between church authorities, pastors, and community leaders. There will also be an emphasis on the positive impact of literacy for both individual and corporate growth.
The Loko people will be well informed regarding the need of having the full Bible translated into their language. Pastors will be trained on the importance of local language usage as congregations and individuals are encouraged to support future Old Testament translation.
Meet with Loko church leaders and chiefdom authorities to stress the importance of mother tongue usage.
Address the need to promote literacy among community leadership.
The strong partnership between the Bible Society of Sierra Leone, local churches and the Loko people leads to spiritual and social development.
The Loko community understands the need for Old Testament translation.
Pray that pastors and local authorities gain appreciation for the usage of the Loko language.
Pray that Loko communities will recognize the benefits of literacy.
Pray that the language community enthusiastically endorses the need for the Old Testament translation.
Though the Loko people have the New Testament, literacy rates remain low. Now steps are being taken to educate community leadership about the impact a literate citizenship can have on the spiritual and civic growth.
